Article written about our device

Our mechanical engineer - Tom Hartley - has written an article about the lamella optimisation study we did. The article shows the amount of thought we put in designing the lamella profile, vibration properties, material choice and manufacturing method. Tom has studied the mechanical and acoustic properties of the lamella in depth using modern tool to rapidly iterate through hundreds of versions before finding the ideal shape. The final lamella profile has been engineered to meet our specific frequency and decay requirements. Read the article here

The first concept renders we're happy to show. This shows the look and feel direction, however the aspects can change as we continue prototyping. In the end the device may look different than these images.

First boards arrived

The first custom boards are here. We are moving on with assembling the components and having the first test firmware code.

A web interface

We are developing a web interface what controls the Orbiton via USB. This is helpful for creating custom presets and setting extra configurations.

Our team grows

Our team is growing with talented engineers. Erik is working on the electronics, starting design of our custom electronic boards. Kacper designs synthesis engines for our custom DSP engine. Max and Chaitra have joined working on concept design and manufacturing. It's the first time the instrument has had a proper team behind each part of it rather than one person. With that, the CAD work has shifted from proof-of-concept to design-for-manufacture. The earlier models existed to prove the acoustic interface worked and the current ones have to survive tooling, tolerances, assembly and cost.

An acoustic interface

We are working on the first prototype of an embedded synth with an acoustic interface. The instrument would use sound-based sensors to shape synth parameters. Instead of knobs and sliders as control parameters, real acoustic oscillators function as control signals at audio rate. It could sit between a controller and an acoustic instrument.

First print of the new layout

Printed the first version of a new layout — searching for a new idea, for something that feels more tactile to play. It's the first physical piece of a design that's been in the works for a long time. More news soon.
